Discovery Tough Mudder for Education

21 Sep Discovery Tough Mudder for Education

15 September 2018: Over 16 KM’s of hill climbs, obstacles, and swims. I was challenged and inspired at the same time.

Of the 2500 people that participated in about 200 were brave enough to tackle the full event, and most of those people were serious athletes. The Tomorrow Trust crowd were all serious amateurs with at most a few months dedicated training and zero experience amongst us at long distance adventure events like this.

When the morning started in the drizzle and fog I jokingly, but seriously, insisted we should at least consider downgrading to the 8KM event. When we accidentally missed our starting group and joined one a group doing the shorter event I was positively relieved yet when two hours later we passed near the 8KM finish line our little group of brave students and staff just kept on going…through water obstacles and up mountains we pushed through for another 8KM, significantly tougher than the first.

I suppose it is a powerful metaphor for the obstacles of academic and professional life, steady belief in yourself and a few helping hands and suddenly you can do things you never thought possible!

We have visions of 50 of more Tomorrow Trust students and supports doing the Johannesburg event, both for themselves and for us.

Thank you, Stacey, the University of Stellenbosch and all who supported us. It was one of the highlights of my already amazing time at Tomorrow Trust!

Looking forward to seeing you all at Tough Mudder 2019!
